Martin's notes: I wrote this in the Blueroom, my flat on Bickerton Road in Archway. We had recorded Kingsize but Creation felt we needed to record a couple more tracks; they thought that there weren’t enough single choices and they were right. I was reading up on the Black Panther Party and wrote this song around that. I think I may have stolen a couple of lines from a Martin Luther King memorial I had seen in
the States but I couldn’t tell you which ones. I can remember Tim programming the drums in his house in New Brighton. We recorded this at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool, I was convinced it should be the
first single and I still think it sounds like a hit.
Lyrics: Drag the shades across the window, don't answer any knock at the door. Keep your hand on the weapon beside you, keep your eyes out for the law. Don't you know and you gotta be all you can be. We're told to run towards the future while they're standing on our feet, and be content with the scraps that they throw us after promising a feast. If you didn't have a gun then I wouldn't need a gun.
